Oh, My Stars!

I'm thanking my lucky stars, God and my Son in law, that this story has a happy ending!  During a phone conversation with my Daughter today, she told me about the near crisis with my Granddaughter.  She hadn't called me last night, because she knew it would upset me.  She would certainly be correct!
These are the parenting moments, every parent dreads.  Unfortunately, they happen.
I asked her to type it out and include a picture.  She has.  I'm sure she is much calmer today, than she was last night!   I can guarantee it!
In her words...
Since we have had our son (10 weeks ago) we spend many evenings out on our back porch.  He loves it outside even though its hotter than hell-o out there.  We get our fan kickin' and the bouncy chair on and sit out for hours while watering the garden and catching up with the hubby's latest shenanigans at his job.  Our daughter, who is 6, goes in and out about 105 times getting toys, just going back and forth from her outdoor fort to her bedroom.
In the middle of our evening, about 8:05, I hear a (weak) cry coming from in the house followed by my daughter appearing at the glass doors.  She's trying frantically to get our attention and her hands are at her throat!  I immediately scream to my husband, "SHE'S CHOKING, SHE'S CHOKING, SHE'S CHOKING!!!!!"  My Husband flings the door open, swings her around backwards and wraps his arms around her. With one Heimlich maneuver I hear something metal chime on the concrete.
She had put a large star-shaped charm in her mouth and it slid down her throat.  Talk about going from one mood to the next!  I went from tears, to screaming.  I told her, "You know better than to put anything in your mouth other than food!"  I made her promise me that she will never do that again and held her in my lap for a good 10 minutes, sobbing.

After she calmed down, she went back inside. My husband made matters worse by telling me we were within seconds of calling 911 and a tracheotomy performed, right here on the porch.
Thanks for making me think about how terrible it could have been...JEEZ!
I sure could have used a stiff drink after that!
This star will be put in the memory box, not because it's a good memory, but because it had a good outcome.

Ms. A, one question: how does a woman become a grandmother without a nervous breakdown, or a dozen, along the way? Nearly had one reading this!
That gold star is a beautiful keepsake memory for one blessing, one life that will continue to be lived, one family, who was protected from unimaginable tragedy...have we asked you, yet: how does a woman become a grandmother without having a nervous breakdown? Talk about thanking your lucky stars! AMEN.

I think I'm in shock. Horrified shock. Thank God that she is okay and that her dad knew exactly what to do.

It's moments like that one that make us all freeze in terror. Thankfully, your son-in-law knew exactly what to do and acted immediately. Thank God the outcome was a good one. Whew. Big hugs to you all.

Holy hell! Thank God she is okay.

The stress just never goes away once you give birth; does it?

How frightening. And how fortunate for the good outcome. So many things could have gone so terribly wrong. Kudos to your son-in-law for his quick thinking.

I am so glad this turned out well!
Remindes me of the time I had to do the same thing with a student who was choking on a piece of candy. The candy popped out and landed on the table. I was shaking, and the kid wanted to know if he could finish eating it!

That was so scary. Thank goodness her dad thought and acted fast and the outcome was a happy one!

I'm glad she's okay, and knew how to communicate what was happening so that her parents could help her. That's a very scary situation and I'm glad it had a positive outcome!

I am the Grandma that NEEDS to be called. My kids know that. It is a blessing that your grand daughter had the where-with-all to go to her parents. Glad it all turned out well. Keeping the star. Cool. Will there be the story kept to go along with it?

wow! That is so scary! I like it how your daughter (after crying and then screaming), said "after she calmed down." I'm sure mom was the one who calmed down... We all fear these things. We have a swimming pool in our yard and I'm SO VERY paranoid about Ash's kids. I don't want to read about a drowning in my pool, so I'm always on Ashley and everybody else to KEEP AN EYE ON THE KIDS. I always think I'm the only one REALLY watching. Probably not true but that's how I feel...

Thank goodness for quick thinking! Glad everyone's ok (including mom and grandma!).

In my teens, I choked on a piece of fish. My foster brother slapped me on the back repeatedly (I'm sure he was just waiting for the opportunity...) and it slid down my throat. As you can imagine, I hate fish now.

Holy Stars! That scared the tar out of me just reading it. I can't imagine going through that as a mother...and the thoughts of not hearing the ruckus. Oy. I'm not going there. God was watching out for the little one. Thank you, Jesus. Love and hugs.

Quick reaction and enough knowledge to perform the maneuver to dislodge the foreign object. Dad did a good job. I think that charm will be shown to the next generation and the story told to emphasize the lesson. Our bodies can only take so many foreign objects. I know you and your family are truly relieved.

Could have been being the operative words. Thank heavens everyone is ok.

Yes, Thank God for you son in law. Children for some unknown reason love to put things in their mouths. Makes parents go nuts.
Thank God for a happy ending!!!

Wow! That is really scary! I'm pleased that everything turned out o.k. and that the star wasn't sharp.
Keep telling her that NOTHING goes into her mouth except food!

This made my heart race! I'm still shaking.
And what a great idea to suggest your daughter write it all out. It helps for her to process her emotions about it. (Funny, I'd have hollered at my kids right before the tears, too).
