Be Still My Heart

Yes, I have a heart, regardless of what some people may think.  I'm sure, because today it has raced on three different occasions.  Without exercising!

First occasion was when I sat down to eat a sandwich and read the paper.  Music is blaring from the bathroom, where hubs is shaving and preparing for work.  TV is on to hear weather reports, general household sounds, then, poof, sudden darkness and silence, except for my heart racing.  Can't begin to explain how much I hate being without power!  Not here, not in summer, not in this heat.  It wasn't even storming, though "Alex" has been the topic of conversation for days.  Recollections of "Ike" and being without power for days, comes to mind.  Called the power company to report it and they said a line was down and would be back up, soon.  Thank goodness, now I could relax.

Second occasion was while talking to my daughter on the phone.  Small talk mostly, until out of the blue she screams... "OhmyGodmomI'mgonnahaftacallyouback!"  Click, silence, except for my heart, once again, racing.  Since she is the mother of two of my granddaughters, I panic, thinking one of them must be hurt.  After a bit, she calls back to tell me that someone had come barreling down the street (she lives in the curve) and hit her neighbors mailbox and gone up in the yard.  Luckily it was raining and the children that usually play outside, were tucked away, safe and sound.

I explained that if she ever has to let me go like that again, PLEASE manage to work in "it'snotthekids" so I won't have a heart attack.  She apologized profusely and agreed.

Third occasion was trying to contact my son.  He is out of town, (in Corpus Christi) to train his new assistant.  He called late Monday saying the law firm had been contemplating closing down and sending him home, due to the impending weather issues.  After hearing the hurricane wasn't supposed to be very strong, they decided to stay open and proceed with business as usual.  When I didn't hear from him by 10pm, I decided to call and check.  No answer.  He knows I was worried about him being there with a storm nearby.  He said he would keep me posted and I don't know what to think.  I'm trying hard to convince myself that if something had happened, somebody would have contacted me.  Now, if I could just convince my heart to stop racing.

I'm exhausted from the internal calisthenics!  This is not my idea of a workout routine.  To think, after all this... my butt won't be any smaller, and the only six pack will still be found in the fridge and I hate beer!

We all have those moments. My most recent one came about a week ago. My man calls me every night, like clockwork. But he missed one night. I wasn't too worried til I tried calling him the next day (house and cell) and got no answer. I then called his daughter, who also wasn't answering her phone. I called him back and left a message to call me because I was beginning to get worried.

He called me a couple hours later, saying that he'd forgotten his cell phone when he went to work (night job) and he slept most of the next day. Ever since then, he calls when he wakes up, before he goes into work and on his 1st break. lol!

I hate those moments, and I have many. Because we've already been through a horrible time, I'm always waiting for something else to happen. Once you have had something bad happen, you know how possible anything is.

I'm sure your son is fine. Let us know...

Anxiety! It's the worst.

I get panic attacks from time to time and let me tell you, they are awful! You feel like something HORRIBLE is going to happen, you can't catch your breath, and my internal jitter is on high alert.

Poor momma! Tell those children to not worry you!

{hugs}

I love the humor infused in your post despite the mini heart attacks. I've had those too for various things. I'm so glad everything is okay, but MAN! Out of the blue things can really affect people! I hope you've heard from your son by now.

Perfection!

On so many levels. First, the internal calisthenics and the 6 pack being a beer. Loved that.

And being able to relate...whose heart doesn't pound and whose stomach doesn't drop at times like those?

Such relatability. Awesome!!

Alexandra said...

Awesome post. I love the tie in with the 6 pack and the pounding heart being inner calisthenics. And, who as a mother, can't relate to what you're speaking about!!

Thats why I hate when the phone rings.
No news is good news.
I always tell people, don't even call me unless someone has died, or I have won money.

Sometimes it feels like a curse to be a mom for sure!

My exercise routine is:
1. Jumping to conclusions.
2. Stirring up trouble
3. Pushing my luck
4. Lifting Spirits

Hang in there, wonderful lady! The inner exercise helps others with your wisdom even if it doesn't take pounds off your butt. You rock! Your advice is priceless.

The heart racing wears me out worse than working all day long and the emotions causing yours is enough to make you feel like you have worked a double all week.

Hoping everything calms down some for you after this :)

Update: my man called on 1st break last night to say, "I can't talk. I just wanted to let you know that I didn't forget my phone." The call lasted all of 18 seconds but it warmed my heart. : )

i feel like IIIII got a workout just reading!!!! i HATE the "igottacallyouback" CLICKS! i hate when jason does that at work, because i wonder if someone got shot, (he works in downtown Los Angeles). i wonder if he's being robbed, or if someone got injured on the job.... ugh! i hate those heart stopping moments. please keep us posted when you hear from your son!!!

baygirl32 said...

I hate those moments that just make your heart stop, the worst always comes to mind. As a teen I pulled too many of those gottacallyouback *click calls, often times forgetting to call back, I hate them as a parent.

I once did a phone call like that to my Mom, not thinking. She ended up on my doorstep within 15 minutes (bless her) and when she realized I was OK, yours truly, an almost-40 year old woman got an earful of why I should never, ever do that again!
I'm glad the rain moved the kids off the street. They say God is in the rain and I guess this is kind of proof that it's true. - G

Would a great big cyber hug help? :)

I so know how you must have felt when you were talking to your daughter..... It's not a pleasant feeling not knowing what's happening and you've got no control.

Please keep us posted about your son...though my gut tells me everything is ok.

The power going out ticks me off too. Now we're always making sure the phones are charged, just in case. The other two eart racing occassions you encountered.....thanks for giving the to me.

i am tryin to convince my own mother that no news is good news...sounds like you may need some convincing as well! stoppin by from momma fargo and may just stick around a while.

Pat Tillett said...

One of those in a day is a lot. To have three happen to you is just too much! Your heart got a workout, that's for sure. You just hang in there my friend and try to relax...
Have a good weekend!

cathyjoy, around here, no news just means nobody has been brave enough to tell me the bad news!

I think I might have been the cause of someone else's racing heart a couple times.

Ca88andra said...

My son is in the habit of sending me messages saying "call". Each time I worry there is something wrong. I've finally got him to message "call - not emergency"!

Ms. A said...

Ca88andra, that reminds me of the pager days. We would type in a number and if it was important, we'd stick 911 at the end. Thanks for dropping in.

Tracie said...

I don't like those sudden shocks either. I hope your son is ok and calls you soon.

Have a great weekend!

Kristy said...

LOL, yes you do have a heart... Man, I can understand why you got stressed out. I get Ike flashbacks too, but especially when your daughter got off the phone so suddenly... I would've immediately thought 'grandkids!' too...

Katie's Dailies said...

Oy! I had one of those moments this morning while I was helping my husband who is sick with the stomach flu. He was feeling like he was about to pass out and just as I grabbed him, his knees buckled and he almost hit his head on the corner of the bathroom cabinet.

Tell you what, if it's not the kids or the dog, it's usually the husband that does if for me!

Hope you have a more relaxed weekend! : )

I remember my heart racing many times like that. When my children were young playing in the back yard and I would hear a blood-curdling scream, I would race back there expecting the worse only to find my daughter pointing at a bug or a worm.

Such a drama queen!

Rawknrobyn.blogspot.com said...

I'm sorry for your heart. It's been repeatedly tested. But it's a huge, strong one, so I have faith it shall recover. (Perhaps in the meantime, you might terminate your phone servies. ?!)

I swear you were just descibing me. My heart racing is about as much action as I get these days too! {Well that and running to and from doctors appointments!} We are kindred spirits. ;-)

Suz said...

Hang in there Ms. A!! Keep the blood pressure down.... A doctor once said "Eat two celery sticks and call me in the morning"! You certainly have a healthy heart, you know its working! :)

Ms. A said...

Neil & Susan, I doubt it's healthy, but I have no doubt it's beating!

I have given many such shocks to my Mom. Having three in a day must have been too much. I'm sorry for your heart. Hang in there.

I hate Beer Too, maybe try a lager and lime now and again, but at a push I'd say give me water, iced and in a long, long glass!!
Hope you don't mind.. I popped over from Eyebrow Uplifted blog. And I could well believe the three times hit by lightning now, and it sounds like your heart has heart a three times hit workout, if only worry was calorific, I'd be skinny by now...x

Ms. A said...

Lady P, thanks for dropping in! The lightning I referred to, was the real thing. We've been hit 3 times, with damages, the last time being the worst! It even got my computer and 60 inch TV.

Sometimes I think our offspring believe their only solemn duty on is this earth, is to cause heart-failure to those who birthed them. Last week my eldest told me, "Please don't worry, but I seem to have sliced my finger off in the blender.."

You are not alone!

It's clear you need a rest after all of this drama. The phone call from your daughter is worse than the non-phone call from your son, I think.

Hope you get some rest and the power stays on!!

Ugh, no power? Hang in there. I'm always in a panic. It's a very painful fleeting feeling sometimes. Trying to calm down isn't easy sometimes. Hugs!

Peggy K said...

My daughter has done that, too, when she was rear-ended with both kids in the car. And she did call me back quickly enough, but not before I had made some unanswered calls to her hubby. Yes, that's a time that the only thing you hear is your heart beating.
First time visitor...I'll definitely be back!!

So? Did you ever get in contact with your son? BTW...."OhmyGodmomI'mgonnahaftacallyouback!" best word ever!!!

Andrea said...

Love it - your last couple of comments, that is! I am sorry about the racing heart - at first, I thought - oh no, poor things having palpitations - yes - you can slap me via internet for the thought! Then I suddenly remembered how beautiful and young you were and realized that couldn't possibly be the reason for the racing heart! So then - maybe you had a pool boy - but hubby getting ready in the bathroom took care of that - though I know he still makes your heart feel the same way! Then...well, then, I just shut up the absurd imagination and read like a normal person! Glad to see that you and all the other's are well.

Anonymous said...

I just want to apologize because I do that to my mom all of the time. I am learning to quick tell her it is OK!!!

I hate losing power. I need the A/C like air!!!

Anonymous said...

Hey! I just saw the date of your last post and it was July 1st!!!!! I hope everything is OK.

Heidi said...

Thought I'd pop in for a visit and look at all these comments on this true to life post! Where are you, it says you wrote this 4 weeks ago. Well, I hope you are well and that your heart is not racing. You explained it so well here and obviously everyone can relate. I know I can. So happy the grandkids were tucked safe inside on the day the car decided to ram the mailbox and jump the curb.

My favorite word here is snotthekids. I will have to steal that for my word wall here by my computer. Thanks. That would also yield a good number of Scrabble points

Cheers! (but not with beers, you don't like beers) :)

Hope all is okay with you. I can complete sympathise with the moments of blind panic - sending love
